BRONX, NEW YORK, February 13- The Maritime men’s basketball team lost to visiting Mount St. Mary College Tuesday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gymnasium by the score of 69-60. The Privateers fall to 4-17 (3-13 Skyline) on the season, while the Knights improve to 17-7 (13-4 Skyline).
"We worked very hard tonight and committed to our game plan,” said head coach Jake Scott. “Unfortunately, they hit some big shots in the second half. I am very proud of our players."
Senior Ron Bethea (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) led all players with 26 points. Sophomore-transfer Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) recorded a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 14 rebounds, while also adding five assists and sophomore T-Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist) contributed eight points on the night.
The Privateers fell behind by as many as five points within the first eight minutes of the game, but took their first lead of the night, 15-12, at 10:24 on a three-pointer by Bethea. They held the lead for the remainder of the first half, going into the locker room at halftime up by one point, 29-28.
Mount St. Mary came out very strong to start the second half, spinning off a 21-3 run over the opening eight minutes to take a commanding 51-34 lead. Maritime fought back to within seven, 60-53, after a 19-9 run, but that was the closest the squad would come the rest of the night, as some clutch free-throw shooting down the line for the Knights kept the game out of reach.
Senior Ryan Straub and junior Joe Henain both had 17 points to lead Mount St. Mary and the 6-8 Henain recorded a game-high 19 rebounds. Junior Donte Howell rounded out the game’s double-digit scorers with 11 points.

BRONX, NEW YORK, February 1- The Maritime basketball team fell short of visiting Sage Thursday night at the Riesenberg Hall Gym, 71-65, in an important conference matchup with late-season playoff implications. The Privateers’ record drops to 4-13 (3-9 Skyline), while the Gators improve to 10-10 (5-8 Skyline).
"We played very hard tonight and did a good job sticking to the game plan,” said first-year head coach Jake Scott. “Unfortunately, a couple of possessions went their way and that decided the game."
Sophomore-transfer Sean Corley (Harlem, N.Y./Thurgood Marshall) led all players with 21 points on the night, while also bringing down a team-high seven rebounds. Four other players scored in double-figures for Maritime as sophomore T-Vaughn Gibson (Freeport, Bahamas/Sunland Baptist) and freshman Tim McNamara (Somerville, N.J./Somerville) both had 13 points, apiece, and senior Ron Bethea (Harlem, N.Y./Humanities Prep.) recorded 11.
Senior Matt Farbotko had 19 points to lead Sage and classmate Ryan Sager registered a double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Junior Mason Horne scored 15 to round out the double-digit scorers.
The game featured 12 lead changes, including one right as the buzzer sounded for the first half, as Sage senior William Hennep nailed a three-pointer to put the Gators ahead 30-28 at halftime. Sage held the lead for the first 10 minutes of the second half, building it up to as many as four points. However, the Privateers regained the lead, 51-49, at 8:20 on a jumper by freshman Kevin Blohm (Staten Island, N.Y./Tottenville).
With the game tied at 56-56 with 4:56 to play, the Gators went on a 9-2 run over the next three minutes to take a seven-point lead, 58-65, with just 1:44 to play. Maritime had to foul late and got some help by some missed free throws to bring the game back down to just three points. However, Sage drained four of their last six free throws to seal the victory.
The Privateers return to action on Saturday, when they will travel up to nearby Purchase, N.Y. to take on Purchase College. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. issued the following statement on the passing of Mayor Ed Koch:
BRONX, NEW YORK, February 1- “Today the Bronx is mourning the death of a son and one of the city’s greatest and most charismatic public leaders. Mayor Ed Koch was a man of wit and wisdom, a leader who helped lift our city out of the brink of bankruptcy, raising our spirits along the way and securing New York’s place as the capital of the world.
“Mayor Koch was always proud of his Bronx roots. During his administration he helped rebuild the South Bronx, creating a task force that helped restore burned-out buildings while creating new, thriving communities—work that still resonates to this day. He was a man of deep devotion, who after leaving office continued to inspire New Yorkers through his activism and his commitment to a city he fiercely loved.
“While we mourn his loss we honor his legacy, commitment to civil rights and his civic leadership, which will forever live in our hearts and in the millions of lives he touched. On behalf of the 1.4 million residents of the Bronx, I would like to extend our most heartfelt condolences to his family and friends during this very difficult time,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr.
